Spring has arrived, and unfortunately, that also means that hay fever season has begun. As temperatures have risen early in the year, trees, plants, and flowers have started to grow earlier and faster than usual. As a result, people who are sensitive to this can suffer from allergic reactions. In Europe, about 1 in 8 people suffer from grass pollen or tree pollen allergy (better known as hay fever).

Hay fever means that a person has developed an allergy to pollen from grasses, plants, trees, and/or herbs and spices. Plants release tiny grains of pollen to fertilize other plants of the same species. Most of the pollen that causes allergic reactions comes from trees, grasses, and weeds. These plants make small, light, dry pollen grains that are carried by the wind. They can then find their way to your eyes, nose, and lungs and cause allergy symptoms if you have a pollen allergy.

What are common symptoms?

People with a pollen allergy have symptoms only when the pollen they are allergic to is in the air. Symptoms include:

  • Runny nose (also known as rhinorrhoea - this is usually a clear, thin nasal discharge)
  • Stuffy nose (due to congestion or nasal obstruction - one of the most common and bothersome symptoms)
  • Sneezing
  • Itchy nose, eyes, ears, and mouth
  • Red and watery eyes
  • Swelling around the eyes
  • Tired quickly
  • Shortness of breath

If you have asthma and pollen aggravates your asthma, you may have allergic asthma. It is the most common form of asthma.

What can you do about it?

As you can see above, hay fever can cause many problems and complaints. It can also reduce your energy levels and productivity. Persistent symptoms can even lead to you being bedridden. And that, of course, is something everyone wants to avoid.

There are several ways to prevent or at least reduce an allergic reaction to pollen. Some examples are:

  • Wearing sunglasses when going outside
  • A nasal spray with an anti-inflammatory
  • Allergy pills and/or other medications
  • Avoid contact with eyes so nothing is rubbed in

It is often recommended to use professional air purifiers such as the ViroPower. Using the right air cleaner ensures that all (remaining) pollen and other allergens are removed from the air. ViroPower uses a dust filter and HEPA filter to ensure that all particles are filtered from the air. The chance of an allergic reaction is thus considerably reduced and you can continue to enjoy the sunny days and a healthy indoor climate.
