What is a virus?

A virus is a microscopic particle that consists of hereditary material packed in a protein shell. Viruses only become active when they invade the cells of living beings. When a virus particle attaches itself to a host cell, the virus's genetic material gives the order to make new viruses. That's how it multiplies. They are entirely dependent on the host. 

Virus particles can range between 20 and 300 nanometers in size. To get an idea of this size: A virus of 20 nanometers is equal to 0.02 micrometres.

HEPA filters are tested according to European standards with particles down to 0.3 micrometres (µm). Viruses can't be (fully) stopped by filters. On top of this, a virus particle is blocked by a filter, while UVC light deactivates a virus.

Virus infection is different from bacterial or fungal maladies. That's why antibiotics do not help against a virus.

What are bacteria?

Bacteria are microscopic, single-celled microbes and can be found almost everywhere: the soils we step on, the deep depths of the ocean and even on the coldest uninhabited places on Earth. Some live in or on other organisms, such as plants, animals, and humans.

These organisms can reproduce by dividing into two identical cells. When conditions are favourable, some bacteria divide every 30 minutes. Therefore, spreading at a much faster rate.

Thankfully, we don't have to worry that much as most bacteria are harmless and beneficial. However, some can be nasty little buggers.
